Grammar Tip

Parallel structure

In writing, parallelism is a similarity of construction of adjacent word groups. Faulty parallelism occurs when different constructions are used to present comparable or equivalent ideas.

Here are some examples of faulty parallelism:

Hiking is more fun than to swim.

Hiking” is a Gerund. “To swim” is an Infinitive. To correct the sentence, we should go with a matching grammatical form:

Hiking is more fun than swimming (or) To hike is more fun than to swim.
